Years Of Experience

Welcome to Bengal Rose Society

Bengal Rose Society was formed in 1980 to spread the knowledge of rose culture in the plains of West Bengal under the inspiration of Late Swami Gouriswarananda, (Ramamoy Maharaj) of Jairambati and Late Dr. Sivaprasad Bandyopadhyay, Late Mr. Ajit Dewan, Mr. Subhash Guha Niyogi, among others.

Bengal (including parts of Jharkhand, during British India) has had a tradition of rose culture and breeding and is closely connected with the history of modern roses. The stud china roses which brought remontancy in rose, took refuge at Indian Botanic Garden, Sibpur (now Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden), before being shipped to Europe. In earlier times rose growing was confined among the elites of the society, but Bengal Rose Society members have developed newer techniques by which common people can enjoy the culture of roses grown in pots-with or without soil.

What the Society does

  • Bengal Rose Society, since its inception in 1980, has been engaged in promoting culture and improvement of roses in West Bengal and other parts of India.
  • The society is affiliated to Indian Rose Federation (http://www.indianrosefederation.com) through which it is connected with the World Federation of Rose Societies (http://www.worldrose.org).
  • The society organises ‘Annual Rose Show’ every year in the month of January.
  • The society publishes ‘Rose Annual’ and other periodicals featuring articles on varying topics relating to the art, science and commerce of rose. These are written by eminent experts from India and abroad. It has also published an internationally acclaimed monograph titled ‘Wonderful Rose Gardens around the World’ which is a collectors’ item.
  • The Society also organises seminars and workshops on cultural and commercial aspects of rose.
  • Since its inception as a registered body in 1981, the Society hosted and organised ‘All India Rose Convention and Rose Show’ four thrice in Kolkata, under the aegis of Indian Rose Federation i.e., in 1991, 2005 and 2017. In January 2020, it partnered  The Agri-Horticultural Society of India in organising the WFRS Regional Rose Convention 2020 in Kolkata, along with 38th All India Rose Show.
  • The Society has among its members a number of experts on roses who guide and advise enthusiasts engaged in, or wanting to take up the growing of roses. These experts also render consultancy services on rose gardening to institutions; the recipients of its services have been the Honourable High Court at Kolkata, the Victoria Memorial Hall and others. Recently, experts from Bengal Rose Society played a major role in preparation of the gardens for the WFRS World Regional Convention held in Hyderabad (2014).
  • Some members of the Society have developed high innovative skills of rose culture in pots, particularly on soil-less medium. They are nationally and internationally known for producing roses in pots of outstanding standards.
  • Starting with its renowned founder-member, Bengal Rose Society has been fortunate to have as its life members a large number of creative and accomplished breeders of roses.
